How to Relieve Chemotherapy-Related Mucositis

Chemotherapy-related mucositis, prevention and treatment.

Extremely painful, mucositis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane which ulcerates. It can be oral or appear in another part of the body such as the digestive tract.

Mucositis is directly linked to treatments (chemotherapy and radiotherapy) which destroy cells that multiply rapidly.

They will destroy cancer cells but unfortunately also healthy cells in the body and in particular the epithelial cells which line the walls of the oral cavity.

Advice:

Mucositis is caused by an acid-base imbalance, which is why I advise you:

  • Limit the consumption of acidifying foods (tomatoes, citrus fruits, etc.).
  • Wash your fruit before eating it.
  • To have excellent dental hygiene.
  • Do not smoke during treatments.
  • Suck on ice cubes during chemotherapy. Since cold is a vasoconstrictor, it will limit the exposure of the oral mucosa when the drug concentration is highest.

In case of clinical manifestations:

  • Report this to your doctor because there are very effective products for treating mucositis.
  • Rinsing your mouth with baking soda or aloe vera gel can help.
